Key Points

  • The Indian IT index recorded its strongest week of performance since 2008.
  • Tech Mahindra, Infosys and TCS led the gains, driving a historic rebound
  • Nasdaq fell 4.5%, investors re-evaluate the exposure to AI

In the week ending October 16, Indian tech stocks rose by 11.7%, and even despite a significant sell-off in US artificial intelligence stocks, they still recorded the largest single-week increase in 18 years.

The Nifty IT index recorded its strongest weekly performance since 2008, driven by corporate earnings that exceeded expectations and a renewed interest from investors in traditional software companies.

Reuters said that this round of gains reflects the improvement in quarterly performance of India's largest software exporters, while the global market is also re-evaluating stocks related to the expensive AI.

The contrast is quite clear: during the same period, the Nasdaq Composite Index fell by 4.5%, while India's leading tech stocks recorded double-digit gains.

Indian IT stock sees its largest one-week rebound since 2008

The Nifty IT index rose by about 11.7%, outperforming India's broader Nifty 50 index, which rose by 2.8%.

The main software exporters, Tata Consulting Services Company (TCS), Infosys, HCLTech, and Tech Mahindra, saw increases this week ranging from 13.4% to 18.2%.

Tech Mahindra stood out particularly, as its quarterly revenue exceeded expectations, and its operational performance has also improved.

After announcing stronger revenue growth and improved profitability, HCLTech also contributed to the recovery of that industry; Wipro saw an increase due to quarterly revenue exceeding expectations.

This rebound helped India's Sensex index rise 3.1% this week, achieving its best performance in six months along with Nifty 50.

However, this rebound occurred after a significant decline earlier on. Indian software exporters have been facing concerns regarding a slowdown in outsourcing demand and an intensification of competition driven by AI in automated processes.

Why are Indian software companies rising in value, while US AI stocks falling?

This differentiation reflects the important differences between traditional IT service companies and those enterprises that finance the boom in AI infrastructure.

Indian companies such as Infosys and TCS primarily generate revenue by providing software development, consulting, and enterprise technical services.

In contrast, companies that develop AI chips and cloud infrastructure often face substantial capital expenditure requirements, hence their valuations are more sensitive to borrowing costs and long-term revenue expectations.

U.S. AI chip stocks have seen a total market value evaporate of about $1.64 trillion over the past six trading days, with NVIDIA, AMD, and Micron among those affected.

Meanwhile, despite a total inflow of about $20 billion into global stock markets, institutional investors still withdrew $4.75 billion from technology sector funds.

Improvements in profitability also directly contributed to the rebound of India's stock market.

These results indicate that even as investors begin to question the substantial expenditures required for building the infrastructure of AI, mature software companies may still benefit from enterprises' adoption of AI.

Can India's historic IT rebound continue this time?

Despite a remarkably strong rebound this week, Indian IT companies still face challenges such as automation, price competition, and cautious corporate technology budgets.

The comparison with Wall Street is particularly noteworthy, as this round of selling did not affect all tech companies equally.

After falling below $80,000 in mid-October, Bitcoin rebounded to around $81,500.
