With the assistance of Longhorn Sports Properties, the sports department of the University of Texas ( University of Texas Athletics ) and the Institute of Sports Business ( Business of Sports Institute , BOSI ) affiliated with McCombs School of Business ( McCombs School of Business ) have announced the launch of Bevo Lab. This project is positioned as the first sports intelligence platform and "living laboratory" in the field of higher education, combining sports, technology, data analysis, and artificial intelligence ( AI ) to enhance human performance and provide students with more practical learning opportunities.

The sports department of the University of Texas stated that with the addition of Dell Technologies, Google Cloud, and SHI International, the university is building a leading sports intelligence platform in the field of higher education, establishing a comprehensive standard for 21 school teams and over 500 student athletes. Bevo Lab will utilize research and data analysis driven by AI to provide real-world solutions that help athletes and coaches improve efficiency in training and preparation, while also cultivating a group of students with practical experience who are qualified for popular positions in the fields of technology and sports analytics.

The Vice President and Director of Athletics at the University of Texas, Chris Del Conte, stated: "With the help of our nationally renowned academic leadership team and cutting-edge technology brand sponsors, Bevo Lab will become a global benchmark for athletic AI and data analytics innovation, making the University of Texas' athletic program one of the most data-driven in the United States. 'Change the world from here,' this vision will transform college athletics. There is no bigger stage, no stronger brand, and no better timing than now to lead this new evolution in sports technology."

Del Conte will officially announce Bevo Lab at the " Business of College Sports Summit " event to be held at The University of Texas on the same day.

Bevo Lab is named after the school's famous live mascot, Bevo, and will be affiliated with BOSI. BOSI is an academic and research center within McCombs School of Business that combines business education, on-field/off-field performance analysis, applied research, and industry participation. This laboratory allows up to 40 student researchers to participate in modeling and data projects each year, under the guidance of a renowned sports data analyst, author, and Executive Director of BOSI, Dr. Kirk Goldsberry.

Goldsberry indicates that: "The AI provided by industry partners, along with emerging technologies, will empower our students and researchers to improve data analysis efficiency and speed, thereby enhancing performance and improving outcomes. Bevo Lab will solidify the leading position of the University of Texas in the fields of sports analytics and AI, and will become a blueprint for the future of sports."

The key innovations that drive Bevo Lab include:

  • Bevo Lakehouse:A unified data warehouse that integrates previously scattered sports-specific data into a single platform, such as match recordings and data from wearable devices; the project will start with rugby and then be expanded to cover all 21 varsity sports.
  • Predictive AI and analysis models:Customized machine learning frameworks, including “transfer AI” for squad evaluation, are designed to provide actionable insights for match strategies, scouting, and player development.
  • Customize front-end applications:Tailor intuitive visualizations and natural language interfaces to the different daily work processes of athletes, coaches, and sports administrators.
  • Next Generation Skills Training:A practical project aimed at UT students, enabling them to acquire AI skills alongside sports teams and deploy real-time applications. Through the first of its kind Google Public Sector Ambassador projects, students will also collaborate directly with engineering teams, gaining high-intensity industry experience, paving the way for their entry into the tech and sports analytics industries.

Dell Technologies: Initiating a new era for university sports

Dell Technologies is deepening its decades-long partnership with the University of Texas, becoming the chief founding sponsor and official technical infrastructure sponsor of Bevo Lab. Based on the breakthrough research conducted by both parties in Texas Advanced Computing Center as well as their extensive collaboration in technological innovation within the field of sports at the University of Texas, Dell will provide a secure and AI ready infrastructure to support Bevo Lab. This will help students, researchers, coaches, and student athletes transform data into actionable insights, accelerate innovation, and enhance human performance.

Dell Technologies Chief Marketing Officer Geraldine Tunnell stated: " Bevo Lab marks a new chapter in the long-standing relationship between Dell Technologies and the University of Texas, and it also reflects our shared commitment to innovation. By providing the secure, AI ready infrastructure that supports this project, we enable students, researchers, coaches, and student athletes to transform data into insights, accelerate innovation, and unlock new possibilities for human performance. We are jointly shaping the future of sports analytics, research, and education."

Google Cloud: From Campus to Competition Day, Promoting AI to Breakthrough

Google Cloud joins Bevo Lab as an official cloud service provider and an enterprise provider of AI, establishing a secure and robust data foundation for the future of university sports performance. With the help of Google Cloud and Gemini – Google's advanced multimodal, proxy-based AI – student researchers and sports staff can quickly integrate massive datasets of sports data to generate real-time sports intelligence. The fast-innovating and specialized engineering teams of Google Public Sector will work directly with UT coaches and students to prototype new sports technologies, while also mentoring future leaders in technology and sports. In fact, early collaborations with Google Public Sector have already introduced AI-driven workflows, enabling UT coaches to save over 15 hours per week in pre-game preparations, allowing them to devote more time to tactics and player development.

Google Cloud, President and Chief Revenue Officer, stated: "As a proud alumnus of UT, I am delighted to see my alma mater at the forefront of the intersection of university sports, academic research, and artificial intelligence. Bevo Lab will establish a new global benchmark for sports innovation, directly enhancing the training, pre-game preparation, and performance of athletes on the field, while also providing the ideal starting point for the next generation of technology and sports analytics leaders. By putting our advanced data analysis platform and Gemini models into the hands of UT students, coaches, and researchers, we are building a solid foundation for sports intelligence that will define the future of the industry."

SHI International: Integrating strategy and technology to contribute to victory

The founding sponsor, SHI, will serve as the strategic technology and solutions integrator for Bevo Lab, transforming the vision of the University of Texas sports department into a secure and scalable technical architecture. Leveraging its extensive experience in IT infrastructure, cloud, AI, and network security, SHI will coordinate the partner ecosystem to ensure that multiple technologies within Bevo Lab operate as a unified platform, serving sports innovation and evolving continuously with the improvement of the school's sports performance. At the same time, it will provide students managing data analysis projects with opportunities for research and career development.

SHI International, Vice President of Advanced Growth Technologies, stated: "For nearly four decades, customers have trusted SHI to integrate the right technologies, partners, and professional capabilities to build, manage, and protect some of the most complex IT environments in the world. As a strategic technology and solutions integrator for Bevo Lab, we are delighted to bring first-class infrastructure, cloud, data, AI, and security technologies together into a credible and scalable environment to help the University of Texas sports department, coaches, student athletes, and researchers achieve excellence on the field, in the laboratory, in the classroom, and throughout their post-graduation careers."

Strategic Cooperation between Sports and Industry

Learfield, a university media and technology company headquartered in Austin, has its subsidiary Longhorn Sports Properties participating in the development of Bevo Lab and helping to bring in its founding corporate sponsors.

Vice President Lucas Motta stated: " Bevo Lab is a cutting-edge collaboration that will have a tremendous positive impact on our coaches, student athletes, and the university. We are delighted to work alongside industry leaders Dell Technologies, Google Cloud, and SHI to help the University of Texas sports department win more championships and to prepare students for the new era of technological labor forces."

Bevo Lab will be located in Innovation Tower, which is adjacent to the UT campus and situated in the heart of the Austin Innovation District. A dedicated microsite introducing Bevo Lab and its research will be launched on texaslonghorns.com / bevolab.
