Comments from President and CEO Å sa Bergman:
"Third-quarter performance set a new record to date"
Sweco delivered its strongest third-quarter performance to date, achieving double-digit profit margins in a seasonally challenging quarter. After adjusting for the calendar effect, net sales increased by 7%, and EBITA grew by 10%. The improvement in performance was mainly due to stronger billing rates and higher average fees.
The market environment remains largely unchanged compared to the previous quarters. Demand in the sectors of energy, water services, environmental protection, and transportation infrastructure remains strong. There has been improvement in the public and commercial construction sectors, driven mainly by investments in hospitals, security and defense, as well as data centers, while the residential market remains weak.
AI is a key component of Sweco in creating value for our customers. Our AI strategy is built on three pillars: enhancing individual productivity; automating core processes; and accelerating digital innovation. AI has a high adoption rate within Sweco. We are currently focusing on process automation and innovative solutions to bring new value propositions to our customers. Sweco holds a leading position in the industry and is in an advantageous position to benefit from this development due to its customer-centric, decentralized operations model, scale, and multidisciplinary approach.
Financial Performance
Net sales increased to 7.606 billion Swedish kronor (7.138 billion), representing 2% organic growth after adjusting for the calendar effect. EBITA increased to 786 million Swedish kronor (702 million), and the EBITA profit margin rose to 10.3% (9.8%). After adjusting for the calendar effect, EBITA grew by 10%, which is 72 million Swedish kronor.
This quarter, EBITA has seen improvement, with Sweden, Norway, and Finland being the main contributors. Sweco Belgium exhibited strong profit margins this quarter, while Sweco the profits from operations in the Netherlands, the UK, as well as Germany and Central Europe continued to improve. In Denmark, although a strong profit margin was maintained, EBITA and net sales declined, reflecting a reduction in activity in the Danish pharmaceutical industry.
Acquisitions and New Projects
This quarter, the company completed four acquisitions: German water management expert STEIN Ingenieure; Swedish construction and infrastructure technology consultant Sitowise Sverige AB; Belgian environmental experts All Soil Assistance; and Belgian engineering consulting firm Technocon. At the beginning of October, the company also completed the acquisition of Belgian Stendess. To date, the company has completed nine acquisitions in four business areas this year, which reflects the group's desire to maintain an active pace of mergers and acquisitions in both niche and large-scale acquisitions.
The company continues to strengthen its position as a partner in the transition towards a more sustainable and resilient society. In Denmark, the company was appointed as the sole consultant for Aalborg Forsyning, supporting the development of a diversified energy system that includes electric heating and waste heat utilization. In Belgium, the company signed a major framework agreement with the national railway company NMBS / SNCB, responsible for overseeing and ensuring the quality of infrastructure projects at stations across the country. In Sweden, Sweco received a high-security facilities framework agreement worth 500 million Swedish kronor from the state-owned property company Specialfastigheter. This agreement includes feasibility studies, design, and construction management, and is applicable to properties with extremely high requirements for safety and functionality.
Future Focus
Our performance in the third quarter indicates that the company continues to make progress in its strategic priorities. We have maintained high internal efficiency, a strong focus on business, and a solid order backlog, while also advancing proactive mergers and acquisitions plans across various business areas. Looking ahead, we will continue to prioritize these aspects and place even greater emphasis on employee development to support steady organic growth, and further move towards our EBITA profit margin goal. Our strong market position and ongoing investment in AI will enable us to enhance our comprehensive service capabilities and create greater value for our customers.
