According to the predictions of NBC News and MS NOW, the Democratic Party won enough seats on Tuesday to regain the majority in the U.S. House of Representatives. This will enable them to launch congressional investigations into the cryptocurrency business of President Donald Trump's family after they take office in the new Congress.
Rep. Robert Garcia, who is expected to come from California, will lead the House Oversight Committee and push for an investigation into the financial dealings of this family, which includes World Liberty Financial.
After the election results were announced, Garcia responded with just two words: "Get a lawyer" ( Lawyer up ). His office stated that they would investigate the alleged corruption issues involving the Trump administration and companies related to the president.
The committee plans to investigate matters including cryptocurrency transactions, potential conflicts of interest involving foreign investors, and government contracts awarded to companies related to Trump's relatives.
Democrats had previously attempted to learn about some of these arrangements, but the new majority will grant them the power to subpoena documents and witnesses without the need for cooperation from the White House.
World Liberty Financial or an early investigation subject
Among the companies that may face investigation are cryptocurrency firms related to Trump and his family World Liberty Financial. This company has drawn the attention of Democratic lawmakers due to its investors and financial arrangements.
One transaction in particular is noteworthy: It is alleged that Sheikh Thahon Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE's National Security Advisor, invested $500 million, and his investment vehicle reportedly acquired a 49% stake in the company shortly before Trump took office in January 2025.
The reason this investment has raised doubts among Democrats is that World Liberty plans to establish a federally regulated trust bank to handle its USD1 stablecoin.
The Federal Reserve Board of the United States ( Office of the Comptroller of the Currency ) granted preliminary conditional approval to World Liberty Trust Company on August 14, but the company still needs to obtain final authorization before starting operations.
According to previous reports by crypto.news, Thahon and his co-investors are said to control 49% of the shares in the bank holding company, while an entity related to the Trump family holds another 38%.
House Democrats had previously requested that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent investigate this foreign investment, but such a request does not carry the legal force of a congressional subpoena.
The cryptocurrency income of the Trump family has attracted widespread attention. Reuters estimates that the Trump family's crypto business has generated at least $2.3 billion in revenue, while investors in the related tokens have suffered significant losses due to price declines.
Another financial disclosure analysis shows that Trump reported over $1 billion in cryptocurrency-related income in 2025, of which approximately $635 million came from royalties related to TRUMP, meme, and coin.
Another potential subject of investigation is Trump's pardon of Zhao Changpeng, the founder of Binance. Binance has business ties with World Liberty Financial through its USD1 stablecoins.
Democrats questioned the background of this amnesty, but Zhao Changpeng denied any business relationships with the Trump family and stated that he had not discussed any arrangements related to the amnesty.
The Democratic Party also plans to investigate Trump family business dealings outside of cryptocurrencies.
In addition to cryptocurrencies, the incoming Democratic majority also plans to review business arrangements involving Donald Trump Jr, Eric Trump, and Jared Kushner.
Garcia told Punchbowl News that investigators will focus on those family members who are 'sitting on the board of directors and receiving contracts', as well as the financial relationships of other companies involved in seeking government business.
The House Oversight Committee has requested the Pentagon Inspector General to investigate whether companies that employed Eric Trump or Donald Trump Jr, or granted them equity, subsequently received preferential treatment in federal defense contracts.
According to Democrats on the House Oversight Committee, since Trump returned to the White House, companies related to the president's sons have received more than $725 million in government loans, grants, and incentives.
Investigators may examine the background of these rewards, including the relationships between the relevant companies and members of the Trump family, as well as the government agencies responsible for disbursing the funds.
Enterprise donors who participated in the Trump White House banquet hall project have also become one of the potential targets as the Democratic Party prepares to review the relationship between private enterprises and the government.
Garcia stated that the committee may act swiftly against government officials, including Acting Attorney General Todd Blanch, and subpoenas could be issued on the very first day when Democrats take control.
These planned investigations could begin as early as February 2027, at which time a new congressional committee will determine the leadership and focus of the investigations.
The majority of seats in the House of Representatives grant the Democratic Party the power to issue subpoenas, but Trump threatens to veto it.
Despite the Democrats regaining control of the House of Representatives, their ability to pass legislation remains limited given Trump's presidential veto power.
The president once threatened that if Democrats took control of Congress, he would "veto everything"; to override a veto, a two-thirds majority in both houses is required.
The priorities listed by Hakim Jeffries, who is about to take up the role of Democratic Leader of the House of Representatives, include: repealing cuts to Medicaid benefits, extending subsidies under the Affordable Care Act, restoring Congress's authority over tariffs, and ending the war with Iran.
The party can block legislative proposals and funding measures put forward by the Republicans, but its oversight committee can conduct investigations independently without the approval of the president.
The Democratic Party expects the White House to resist and is considering issuing subpoenas to private businesses and individuals in order to obtain records that government officials may refuse to provide.
During Trump's first term as president, his administration resisted congressional requests for documents and invoked executive privilege in disputes with Democratic investigators.
The White House has rejected the latest investigation plan. Before the election, White House spokesperson Lauren Bis told Newsweek that the Democrats' "only agenda is to continue the ten-year witch hunt against President Trump."
Garcia also separately promised to investigate the alleged misconduct of former Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristie Noem and Corey Lewandowski, as well as the way the government handled records related to Jeffrey Epstein.
