Apple plans to return to the investment-grade bond market for the first time in over a year, aiming to raise approximately $7 billion. The funds will be primarily used for stock repurchases, reflecting a significant difference in capital allocation between this tech giant and its peers.

According to Bloomberg, which cited people familiar with the matter, the scale of this issuance has not yet been finalized and may be adjusted depending on investor demand. The proceeds from the bonds will be used for general corporate purposes, including share repurchases, dividend payments, and capital expenditures.

Apple's current bond issuance is divided into seven parts, with maturities ranging from two to ten years. The initial pricing range for the longest-term portion is 80 basis points above the yield of U.S. Treasury bonds. Apple's last bond issuance was in May 2025, during which it raised $4.5 billion.

This bond issuance will further fuel the wave of bond offerings from large, already active technology companies. At the same time, analysts point out that Apple's move is more reflective of opportunistic financing rather than a need for funds driven by AI infrastructure construction.

On Thursday, Apple's stock opened higher but closed lower, falling by 1.2% as of press time. It recorded the second smallest decline among Mag7, with only Google's decline being smaller than Apple's.

Opportunistic financing, rather than AI expansion-driven

Bloomberg analyst Robert Schiffman stated, "Apple's return to the bond market seems more like opportunistic behavior rather than being driven by financing needs; the funds raised will be used for share repurchases and dividends."

He further pointed out that for Apple, "shareholder returns have a higher priority in capital allocation than the large-scale AI infrastructure expenditures faced by its peers in the hyper-large-scale cloud computing industry."

This judgment contrasts with the recent financing strategies of Microsoft, Oracle, and Meta. Since last week, these three companies have raised a total of $50 billion in the US market, with the funds primarily used to support their respective artificial intelligence infrastructure investment plans.

It is worth noting that recently issued bonds related to AI by large technology companies generally come with higher yields. This is because investors' concerns about whether their substantial investments in AI will translate into actual returns have increased, leading them to demand more risk premium compensation.

Issued in a seven-tier structure, jointly underwritten by the four major banks

According to people familiar with the matter, Apple's bond issuance is divided into seven tiers, with maturities ranging from two years to ten years, providing investors with a variety of maturity options. The initial pricing range for the longest-term tier is 80 basis points above the yield on U.S. Treasury bonds.

JPMorgan Chase, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, and Bank of America served as the underwriters for this bond issuance. Apple's last dollar bond issuance was in May 2025, during which it raised $4.5 billion.

Since the proceeds from this bond will be prioritized to return to shareholders rather than being invested in emerging technology infrastructure, its market positioning differs from the current wave of bond issuances by large tech companies, and it may attract fixed-income investors who prefer a stable capital return logic.
