U.S. President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he had ordered the Justice Department to investigate Democratic leaders due to what he claimed were threats against Republican officials, donors, and supporters; however, he did not specify what these alleged communications were, nor did he provide any evidence of criminal activity.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: 'Democrats are threatening many people everywhere, including the U.S. Attorney General and others, with threats of impeachment and various other forms of punishment, even though they themselves admit that there is no reason to do so.'
Trump said that these so-called threats are "extortion at the highest level." He wrote, "I am ordering the Department of Justice to immediately investigate this criminal act!"
In the post, Trump claimed that Democratic Senator Eliza Slottkin from Michigan ( Elissa Slotkin ) was planning to target "all young people who believe in Republican values."
Trump is clearly referring to Slutkin's speech at an event at the University of Chicago on October 13. At that time, Slutkin said: "I hope that young people who have just graduated will say, 'Should I work for Trump's administration?'... I hope they will think, 'Oh no, that could bring me a lot of trouble I don't want. So I'll just avoid getting involved.' I hope this deterrent message will get across."
Slotkin stated that after a video was released in November 2025, she, her family, and her staff faced intimidation both physically and legally. In that video, Slotkin and other Democratic leaders called on the U.S. military to "refuse illegal orders" following airstrikes against ships in the Caribbean region.
On November 20th, Trump called this video an act of treason and stated that "a precedent must be set."
A few days later, the Federal Bureau of Investigation contacted members of Congress, including Slootkin. In February of this year, Slootkin refused to comply with a request from the Department of Justice for an interview regarding that video.
In February of this year, the senator stated, "Intimidation is the goal in itself, and I will not cooperate with such tactics." Subsequently, a federal grand jury decided not to prosecute any participants in the video.
Today, Trump claims that Democrats are making threats of a legal nature against Republican leaders and their supporters.
The president wrote: "Republicans should quickly become smart! Democratic political leaders have sent threatening letters to many innocent people."
The White House and Slutkin did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
