According to CoinMeta, the U.S. Treasury Department has expanded the scope of sanctions against Iran, including the entire digital asset industry of that country within the scope of sanctions. OFAC can take measures against industry operators regardless of their location. These measures came into effect on August 24th and cover sectors such as gold, shipping, aviation, and technology. Elliptic tracking has revealed that the Iranian Central Bank has acquired at least $507 million in USDTTether. In April, $344 million related to this bank was frozen. USDT Iran obtains crypto assets through Bitcoin mining, and Elliptic estimates that its Bitcoin mining accounts for about 4.5% of global Bitcoin mining, generating hundreds of millions of dollars in crypto assets annually. These measures will not automatically sanction all Iranian cryptocurrency users, but the U.S. Treasury Department now has greater authority to target supporters of this industry and related designated entities.
