OpenAI opens up the underlying capabilities of Codex to developers, and Agents API enters public beta testing
2026-09-11 04:10:57
According to CoinMeta, OpenAI has officially launched the public beta version of Agents API, making available to all developers the proxy framework and infrastructure that were previously used to support Codex and the enterprise version of ChatGPT. Developers can directly build production-grade AI proxies through API, with fees calculated based on token consumption and tool usage. Agents API is known for its ability to run for extended periods and handle complex tasks, supporting continuous operation of proxies for hours or even days. Customer cases disclosed by OpenAI show that after adopting SafetyKit, the cost per case was reduced by 60%, the proxy response failure rate was lowered by 86%, and the evaluation score of Cirridae increased from 0.71 to 0.85, with latency also being reduced by four times. Agents API offers a sandbox environment identical to that of Codex and ChatGPT and has already been integrated with multiple partners, supporting different CPU, GPU, memory, and deployment environments. This opening up signifies that OpenAI is transforming Codex from a programming product into a proxy infrastructure platform aimed at developers.
