AI Data Center Debt Risk: What If AI Revenue Cannot Keep Up?
2026-09-11 23:53:28
According to CoinMeta, the debt risks of the AI data center have drawn attention. The AI company has invested substantial funds in the data center without having yet determined its revenue, resulting in an increasing amount of expenditures being financed through debt. Over the past year, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, and Oracle have issued approximately $220 billion in bonds to support AI infrastructure expenses. At the same time, developers such as Vantage Data Centers have also borrowed tens of billions of dollars for construction purposes. Although debt itself is not necessarily a problem, risks arise when revenue, utilization rates, or cash flows grow more slowly than borrowing. Oracle's AI related orders have reached $664 billion, but the company is still making significant expenditures and recently reported a negative free cash flow of $5.4 billion. It is expected that Oracle will raise about $40 billion this fiscal year while also making substantial investments in cloud computing capabilities.
