Uber The company disclosed that it will lay off approximately 3,300 employees, which accounts for about 10% of its total global workforce. This round of adjustments is being carried out in conjunction with organizational restructurings, with the aim of reducing management levels and diverting more resources towards travel, delivery, and Robotaxi business.

Management positions to be cut by approximately 20%

According to an internal email sent by Dara Costrosashi to employees, referenced as CEO, the company plans to reduce the number of management positions by about 20%. Some employees who previously held management roles will subsequently be reclassified as individual contributors.

Bloomberg previously reported that Uber is still downsizing teams that are too small. The number of teams with only 1 to 2 members will be reduced by about half, and some positions with more than 7 layers of reporting relationships from CEO are also within the scope of adjustments.

Integration of Engineering and Distribution Departments

Internal emails reveal that Uber is integrating departments related to engineering, science, and distribution in order to reduce duplicate coordination and decentralized management. In terms of distribution operations, the teams responsible for catering, retail, and direct delivery will also be further merged.

The company stated in the email that over the past few years, business expansion has led to more product lines and new businesses, but it has also made the organizational structure more complex, with an increase in management levels and higher coordination costs between teams. Some of the original architectures are no longer suitable for the current scale.

Remote work policies are becoming stricter.

In addition to layoffs and team integrations, Uber is also tightening arrangements for remote work. The company will only allow less than 1% of its employees to continue working remotely, with the vast majority of positions returning to offline or regular office modes.

Additional information:Bloomberg was the first to disclose details of the layoffs. Internal emails cited by TechCrunch show that this round of adjustments covers personnel, reporting hierarchies, and business groups simultaneously.
