IT News on October 1st: According to a report in The Financial Times today, Tencent has signed its largest overseas leasing agreement with Oracle, obtaining approximately 100,000 advanced AI chips from multiple Oracle data centers in Southeast Asia. Neither Tencent nor Oracle has responded to requests for comments.

According to informed sources, Tencent has agreed to a five-year lease this year, involving several Oracle data centers in Southeast Asia. The transaction is valued at approximately $7 billion (Note from IT: the current exchange rate is about 47.018 billion RMB), with a down payment of around 30%. Tencent plans to use this computing power to advance the development of AI models and agent tools.
It is claimed that ByteDance and Alibaba remain the largest customers for data centers in Southeast Asia. Such leasing agreements are permitted under US regulations and may also provide advanced chips that NVIDIA cannot obtain in China. Chinese technology giants and cutting-edge AI laboratories are utilizing these resources for tasks such as model training.
Company data shows that Tencent's capital expenditure in the second quarter increased by 176% year-on-year to 53 billion yuan, which was used for prepaid payments for AI infrastructure and computing power resources. Tencent has also recruited more top-tier talents and reorganized its infrastructure and data departments.
