Chris Murphy, a Democratic senator from Connecticut ( Chris Murphy ), announced on Sunday that Murphy was hospitalized after suffering a stroke during his son's hockey game on Saturday.
Murphy's chief of staff, Allison Hewitt ( Allison Herwitt ), said in a statement that Murphy is "clear-headed and responding normally".
Hewitt said, "Yesterday afternoon, Senator Murphy began to feel numbness in his arm while at his son's hockey game. He was then taken to a local hospital where it was discovered that he had suffered a stroke. Afterwards, he was transferred to Johns Hopkins Hospital for further monitoring, and so far he is responding well to the treatment."
The main campus of Johns Hopkins Hospital is located in Baltimore, but there are also other campuses in Washington and its surrounding areas.
Hewitt said, "The doctors are encouraged by his progress in recovery. We are optimistic that he will make a full recovery."
Murphy joined the Senate in 2013 and did not need to run for re-election on Tuesday. However, he has been actively supporting Democratic candidates across the country recently, having visited Michigan, Minnesota, and Florida. He was also scheduled to travel to New Hampshire on Sunday to campaign alongside Democratic Senate candidate and Representative Chris Papas ( Chris Pappas ).
He is regarded as a potential candidate for the 2028 presidential election and is also an important fundraiser for the Democratic Party.
53-year-old Murphy served in the House of Representatives for six years before running for senator. He gained national attention for advocating for stricter gun control laws following the Sandy Hook shooting incident in his home state. He has always been a vocal critic of U.S. President Donald Trump and opposes the United States' war against Iran as well as the White House's deportation policies.
In recent years, several of the current senators have suffered strokes.
New Mexico Democratic Senator Ben Ray Lujan ( Ben Ray Luj ) and Maryland Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen ( Chris Van Hollen ) both suffered strokes in 2022. Pennsylvania Democratic Senator John Feitman ( John Fetterman ) was also running for public office at that time; he had a stroke a few days before the state's Democratic Senate primary election.
Connecticut Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal ( Richard Blumenthal ) posted on X on Sunday, saying: "Thinking of my dear friend and colleague Chris Murphy. I know how tenaciously he fought, and I am certain that we will soon welcome him back to the Senate."
